Where can you drop-off unused or unwanted medications? Leaving prescription drugs around for others to use may contribute to the growing problem of prescription drug abuse. It’s important to dispose of any used, unused, or expired medication or prescription drugs as soon as possible.
The following is a list of pharmacies, police stations, and other hazardous waste drop-off locations that accepts drugs for the northern California region, including San Francisco Bay Area counties and cities.
In general, most pharmacies will not accept any controlled substances (i.e. illegal drugs), but most police stations will. Visit the location’s website or call them to determine hours. Some pharmacies offer a mail-in program for a small fee; otherwise, drop-off locations are free.
Occasionally, the DEA also hosts a National Drug Take-Back Initiative.
